Calculating Percent by Mass

Percent by mass is used to describe the concentration of a solution. It can also describe how dilute a solution is.

Known                                                                      Unknown

Mass of Solute                                                     Percent by Mass

Mass of Solvent

Mass of solution = Mass of Solute + Mass of Solvent

?    = 3.0g NaCl + 100.0g H2O

Mass of solution = 103.0 g

Percent by Mass = Mass of Solute / Mass of Solution X 100

3.0 g / 103.0 g X 100

0.0291 X 100

2.9% Dilute/Concentrated
