Calculating Percent by Volume

Percent by volume is used to describe the concentration of a solution. It can also be used to describe how dilute a solution is.

Known                                                                  Unknown

Volume of Solute                                           Percent by Volume

Volume of Solvent

Volume of Solution = Volume of Solute + Volume of Solvent

?   = 2.0g C2H5OH + 100.0g H2O

Volume of Solution = 102.0 g

Percent by Volume = Volume of Solute / Volume of Solution X 100

2.0 g / 102.0 g X 100

0.0196 X 100

1.96%

Rounded off = 2.0% Dilute/Concentrated
